Scanyacht 290 drawings/info (and comparison to LM27)

The Scanyacht 290 was a version of the LM27 produced by Scanyachts in England after LM stopped building them.  Scanyachts was the agent/importer for LM in the UK.

The Scanyacht document below has various drawings and info about the Scanyacht 290, including a comparison of dimensions between the Scanyacht shallow and deep draft versions, and also the original LM27.  

The most obvious (to me) differences from the LM27 are:

• Larger rig
• More ballast (by using lead, rather than steel/iron for ballast)
• Availability of a deeper keel version
• Lighter overall weight (as the ballast had gone up, presumably the hull was built lighter)
• Availability of a two seat wheelhouse option, with the galley replacing the port hand bench/berth in the saloon.

Where could I buy a set of legs for my scanyacht 290 (shallow) ?

Hi Mudberth,

I'm sure you know that Yachtlegs are really expensive. I made my own beaching legs out of hardwood but currently use scafold poles in the yard, see picture.

I made hardwood blocks to go inside and outside of where the bolts go through the hull and I had nuts welded to inner stainless steel plates so you can screw the long leg fixing bolts in from outside as a one man operation.

The whole lot is fastened to the hull by two smaller bolts which go all the way through and sandwich the blocks and plates.

It is necessary to splay the fixings somewhat and you have to shape the blocks accordingly .The blocks are glassed in on the inner siide.

Wooden legs have to be the right length, 2" short of the draught for beaching but this is a bit of a bind in the yard where you have to chock up. The scaffold poles are very convenient to use ashore. I dont have any pics of the hull installation and currently can't take any but I could provide a drawing if you are interested.

The bottom plates for each leg were "rescued" from other sources but you could easily get these made up. I use 16mm for the attachment bolts and made the scaffold clips myself out of mild steel strap. the bolts need to be 200mm long.

This arrangement is very secure. The load is mainly on the keel and the legs provide support. I use wooden shores as well when I leave the boat, just in case but this is really belt and braces.

I've been dreaming of adding some 40 - 50cm to the depth of my beloved LM-27

It seems to bee a project I can overcome.

I made a new bigger fishtail-rudder a couple of years ago. It made a huge difference on the turningcircle, and I'm able to tack without starting the engine.

But the leeway is still big, and it's hard to gain any windward hight. And it somtimes rolls like a hotwatertank .

A new "Scanyacht-keel" and rudder is on the drawingboard. But would the strugle and money pay out?

Are there anyone out there with some first hand knowledge? Someone been sailing both the keels and seen end felt the differense? If any?

I've not sailed a Scanyacht, so can't say how much difference the deeper keel would make, but I'm sure there would be some. The question is how much effort do you want to put in to make a likely fairly marginal difference to a boat that was never intended to be particularly close winded.

The general consensus seems to be that sailing any closer than 50 degrees to the apparent wind in an LM27 is pretty pointless as you've be making excessive leeway. The shallow long keel and wide sheeting angle for the foresail are ill-suited to sailing very close to the wind (though the foresail sheeting angle is easier to change). Better in an LM27 (or at least an unmodified one) to sail further, but faster, off the wind, or put the engine on.

I, too, would be interested of anyone on here has sailed both a standard LM27 and the deeper keeled Scanyacht version, and hope you'll report back on both the modification and the results if you decide to go ahead.
