Hello, New to the forum, and to LMs. I'm looking at buying. Can anyone comment on the benefit of the Mk2 boats with the triple keels. Do the bilge keels reduce stabilty? Do they help with leeway? I can't find any information about other differences between the Mk1 & 2. Are there any copies of old brochures available as PDFs on the internet. Any advice would be much appreciated.
I don't have any direct knowledge of the Mk2 (hopefully someone will be along shortly who does), but I suspect that triple keel was not standard. I imagine that it comprises an addition of bilge keels or plates to the standard hull, and it was either an option (perhaps by the UK importers, ScanYachts), or perhaps more likely an owner modification.
Here's some information on the 'MkIIA' in a document that came with my boat (which is a Mk1!). Whether there was a MkIIB or plain MkII I don't know. LM 27 MkIIA.pdf (83.3 KB)
As far as I can see the principal differences from the Mk1 are:
• Modern Perspex hatches in place of both the wooden ‘butterfly’ saloon hatch and the GRP forepeak (and wheelhouse?) hatches
• Genoa winch mountings incorporated into GRP deck/coaming moulding, rather than separate metal bracket
• Aluminium framed windows in place of the earlier rubber?
• Volvo 18hp or 28hp engines rather than Bukh 20hp or 36hp .
I think I’ve also read somewhere on this forum that the back of the wheelhouse slopes differently on the Mk2, but I am not clear what that refers to.
