LM30: Exchange of the front window in the deckhouse.

Hello to the community. Tips from you would help me.

I am now the third year that I am the proud owner of an LM30. Since the wheelhouse heats up very much in summer, I think about replacing the middle front window with one that can be opened. Fans or similar technical gimmicks are out of the question.

The impetus came from a template that I saw in an LM24. You can put out the top 2/3 of the window. When asked by a specialist, the radius (corner) of the window was too small (at least 75mm) to produce something that could be exhibited. For me the radius should be between 40 and 45 mm. I only want to remove the window when it makes sense, so I have to estimate the opening dimensions.

Has the project ever been tackled by an LM30, or has knowledge of the topic?

I replaced the center window on my LM32 with an awning type. To do this, I removed the entire window and frame, and shipped it to a company in Florida. They fabricated a complete new frame, glass, hinges etc. and it has worked well. In our mid-Atlantic region, it can get very hot, the opening window has solved that problem. Hopefully the LM30 can accommodate an similiar approach.

Our nearby ship window manufacturing companies can only produce windows with a corner radius not less than 29.5 inches. My window has a 16 inch radius. This is related to the bending possibilities of the window frame. I would have to fill up the window opening in the Fiberglas for a larger radius. But you would see that because the 1 inch wide window frame does not cover the corners or curves. You don't get the color perfectly, guaranteed. The LM24 and LM27 have sufficiently round corners. There are complete sets for window replacement for them.
Maybe you have the address of the company that built your window.

The company that custom made my replacement center window and frame is Ocean Dynamics in Miami, Florida. They managed to get the same corner radius as the original. It was pricey. Vetus makes custom windows but I have not looked into their products. Here's the url: oceandynamics.com/

Best of luck, it's not an easy process. But worth it to get the air flowing thru.

It is the first one I see in a LM32. I think it is same to LM30.

The radius in the middle window looks significantly larger than in the two side windows.
Maybe the frame covers the missing parts in the cutout of the corners.

Maybe I have to remove the window first to know the exact radius of the cutout.

You're most welcome! The new frame corner radius is larger than the original, and left a gap that the new windows inner cover, the part that you see in the photo, just manages to cover. The real trick was to get the cover on once the actual window was set, as the 'dashboard' comes up under the window. It's really tight, I had to make a special wrench to get all the hex head screws installed. If I were to do it again, I'd have a local shop custom make the window and install it.

Sometime ago in these posts someone mentioned that the original windows are still available from a supplier. Does anyone know that company? And was an opening center window a factory option?

Apart from yours, I have never seen an LM 28/30/32 with a window open. So I don't think the yard ever offered it. There are some companies in Germany that regularly offer aluminum window sets for the LM 24/27 on Ebay. I spoke to "Schiffsfenster.de". Therefore I have the information about the radii.
