The later versions API CF-4, which you'll find in any supermarket/car supplies shop, will be OK (they're supposedly 'backwards compatible, though oriented to more recent engine design/use stresses). Ideally use monograde SAE 30, but multigrade SAE 15/30 is OK.
Better to have good quality oil, regularly changed, than the ideal standard long past its prime.

Page S3 of the Bukh workshop manual for the saildrive of my DV36-SME states: "Use the same quality of oil as for the BW7 gear." Page R3 in the section for the BW7 gear states: "Quality of lubrication oil marked Service CC or CD with firm viscosity of SAE20, alternatively SAE30 is used. Oils covering more viscosity numbers must not be used."
Page N8 in the section giving the oil specifications for the engine, includes the statement: "An oil having various viscosity numbers, e.g. SAE10/50 or a similar one, must under no circumstances by used on the gear."
Thus I would never use a multigrade oil in my BUKH saildrive. I use straight SAE30 in my saildrive. But: I don't know if the oil for the saildrive of a DV20 is the same as, or different from my DV36 SME. The link offered above should guide you.
I use Service CF SAE15/40 in my engine here on the west coast of Canada, with its very similar climate to Britain. Page N8 of the workshop manual gives specs for various temperature ranges.

Discussion of oils for Bukhs, including reported recommendations (15/40w multigrade) from Al and Norman at Bukh UK, whose vast knowledge of Bukhs is legendary (both retired now, sadly):http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?189947-Bukh-Engine-amp-Gearbox-Oil
More general info on marine engine oil and considerations of API classification, viscosity etc. on this great website by Vyv Cox, metallurgist, author of book 'Metals in Boats' and numerous yachting magazine articles, who worked for an oil multi-national for 30 years investigating engine/machinery failures, boat owner and former Bukh owner: coxeng.co.uk/engine/oil-for-yacht-engines/
Bukh now includes recommendations for multi-grade oils, so there doesn't seem to be a problem with them.
The Bukh 36 is still in production, as is the twin, but now rated at 24hp, 29hp or (with turbo) 32hp. The current manuals include recommendations for multi-grade oil for both the twin and triple engines and also the ZF gearbox (the latter only now available with the DV36 - other current gearboxes use ATF). They do not seem to be available now with sail drive, so no new lube info for them.
The following is direct from the current DV36 & DV24 manuals. Only the capacity differs between the 36 triple and 24 twin. The oil for the single (DV8 and DV10) (no longer made) will presumably be exactly the same.

Sorry to bump an old topic but just to be sure into something.. My LM has saildrive, so as I read the owners manual, there are more types of transmission, right? Because I was reading something and got confused that there is a gearbox (requires 1,1l oil capacity) plus saildrive oil (3,3l oil capacity), separate but saildrive is already its "gearbox" right?
Hi again Dolac. I don't know for certain, and I've never owned a boat with a saildrive, but my understanding is the same as yours: you either have the gearbox (for conventional shaft drive) with 1.1l capacity, or you have the saildrive with 3.3l capacity.
I have sail drive, I know that, was just curious is there any extra gearbox or not (as I got confused with some topics on the internet), but what I have found, no.. Does anyone know can I use the same oil for engine and sail drive?
I know how stupid I might look like cuz of last post, I got confused at the moment and post stupid thing... If you guys don't mind, do you think can i use same oil for the engine and sail drive? The only mineral monograde oil I have found so far is Lukoil Diesel SAE 30 API CC, mineral monograde motor oil.. I can't upload an attachment tho....
