Completed installing a new large cleat on the foredeck of my LM 32 today, in time for the winter gales. Having refastened both bow cleats with large backing plates, I still felt there was insufficient strength in the factory toe rail cleat fastenings. Several owners have reported failures with chunks of toe rail torn off.
The new 8 inch cleat, Schaefer # 60-80, is similar in profile to the LM factory cleats. It has a wide base and four 3/8th inch dia. mounting holes. The bolts go thru the cored deck and the stained maple backing plate. Its bedded in BoatLife caulk. The installation came out really well. Just take your time and triple-measure everything.
While intended as a winter mooring fixture, this installation would be a more robust tow point than the original toe rail cleats, that could be pulled off sideways. Happy to answer questions if the photos aren't sufficient.
