Technical Specifications (LM 30) 1981

  My name is Christos. I am currently thinking about buying a used LM(30) sailboat. I search but cant find technical specifications (Stix Factor,Avs and gm curves,polar diagrams,etc...)

Hi Christos,

l searched for the same information before l bought my LM30 but l could not find any. So l came to the conclusion that the LM30 was produced before such calculations became common knowledge for boat tests etc.
Still bought the LM30 though - a good solid boat !!

I thought the same at start but found that lm(27) that is older model has such specificatios. So lm(30) must have these numbers.

Maybe such information is located at the original brochure of lm(30). But i cant download it because i am not a member of this site. It is on the folder 'Ideas For Sharing'. If someone could send me this i would be gratefull.

Hi Christos.
To the best of my knowledge: As written, the LM30 is so old, like the other LMs designed by Palle Juul Andersen in the 70ties, that no one ever has made the modern balance and stability calculations on them. The LM27 was not calculated either, but when Scandyachts bought the rights and drawings of the LM27, times had changed and the Scandyacht 290 which was made in the 90ties was tested and calculated. As the underwater hull of the Scandyacht 290 is the same as on the LM27, the nubmers from the 290 can be used on the LM27, which sure is one of the most stabil yachts ever made. By the way, it was based on the Colin Archer rescue vessel.

Thank you for the information sir.
I know about colin archers vessels data and double checked and they have a lot in common. Most importand that i found is that Lm sailboats have 55% of their weight (Keel and underwater hull) underwater and they are semi fin keel. The keel is not attached to the hull but the construction made so keel and hull is one thing. Starting from bow to stern. It has the technical characteristics i want so i will propably buy this particular LM(30).

Does the LM 30 come in a long keel version? I have only ever see the bilge keel version, and I am pretty sure that the keels were bolted on. Perhaps there is a fin keel version as well and that might be cast in one piece like the LM 27.

Lm30 comes with a fin keel. But not screwed up in the hull. Instead its attached like a full keel, hull and keel is one thing. Its not fin-keel but semi fin keel.

Here is mine, keel is part off the hull, not bolted. Semi finkeel.

Hi,
The bilge keel version of the lm 30 has bolted keels. As I found with help from this forum the bolts are cast in 'U' bolts and therefore not threaded into the keel in the conventional way. However within each of the port and starboard lockers six bolts with nuts are visible in a 1 2 2 1 pattern. Best regards Chris

The keel was made of iron with big bolts moulded into it. There after it was bolted to the hull and after that, some layers of fibre glass was laid around hull and keel. I have a PDF brochure showing how the keel is put on. How do I upload?

There was once, and may still be a copy of the original sales brochure for LM30s and 32s somewhere on this website, and it contains a photo with the caption "Releasing an LM30 from the mould, Notice the hull and keel: One piece." Unfortunately, the technical data you're looking for isn't in that brochure.

This same brochure describes the displacement of a LM30 as 5 tons, and the keel weight as 1.9 tons.

I own a LM32, and it's keel is a bolt on long fin.

Published Specs vary between 5 tons and 5,350 Kg for the LM 30 - Reading further/ wider into the matter it is suggested that most boat builder's displacement figure is the 'dry' weight and that a 'half Load' assessment of 1,000kg be added to cover fuel/water / sails / spars and other misc contents.
Personally I have always quoted 6,000 kg for a lift but frankly most boat yard lifting equipment seems to start at 10,000 kg for the small tractor tow and up to 60,000 kg for the big 4 wheel travel lift machines. - I am sure most boat yards can tell by eye if their equipment has the capacity as can lorry drivers from past experience.
