First impressions, it looks like an old fashioned multi-pin connector. My reasoning is that in the first pic. it looks as though the male part of a plug would locate into the numbered brass slots and then be secured with the threaded posts.
lf it was just loose in the engine compartment then l would discard it otherwise trace the wiring to see where it goes. Another thought is that it could have been part of an earlier engine wiring loom which would have multi-pin connectors. Is it possible to get inside the box to see if there are any further clues ?
Finally if all the electrics/engine/instruments worked when you bought the LM then it may be surplus to requirements.
Looks like a Radar connector to me, multi-way connector for cable going to the scanner unit, multicore cable to display unit smaller cables going to the main power and... ?
Have you got Radar?

Mick

Yes, I have radar- but the connections run completely differently.
I have yet to see where the other end of the cables go to. The wiring in the boat seems to have been re-done two or 3 times over the years- it really needs to be stripped out.
This might be from an old Radar installation where the radome was mounted on the tafrail. The other connection could go to a GPS or digital compass to facilitate North up mode on the display.
