The lacquer on the Teak hand holds was looking sad and flaking so I have removed the old lacquer down to the bare wood. Now I'm wondering whether to re-lacquer or would it be better to use a good quality wood oil, teak oil? Your comments/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.
I treat the handles each year 1 to 2 times with wood oil. In spring wash first well (careful with pressure washer), let it dry and then apply with a small brush. Best in warmer weather otherwise the oil too thick
I am currently using Sadolin extra durable (antique pine) which gives a lovely colour and satin sheen. For some reason the handles suffer from the sun more than the skylight. My skylight has looked very good for several years with just a top up coat in the autumn, however, I have just had to take off the handles and strip them back to bare wood, not too difficult but it's a 2 man job to screw them back on, one down below and one on deck; be careful to align the screws with the existing holes. The teak will split readily if not. For this reason label the handles and their orientation Fore/aft when removing. Seal the holes temporarily with masking tape. You get a good job this way without getting anything on the GRP.
