Request for Test Sail of LM 30

My wife and I are looking for our next boat and we keep coming back to an LM 30 as our first choice. We have viewed a few examples, are very impressed by most aspects of the boat and it seems to meet many of our requirements.


It is frequently reported that they sail well. However, what we are not sure about is, do they sail well ‘for a motor sailor’ or do they sail well full stop.
We are interested to know with which class of yacht she compares? In other words, which yachts do you regularly overtake and which are you over taken by?


We would really like to go for a test sail prior to making our decision. However, the normal purchase procedure provides a test sail only after a contract is signed.


We would be very grateful if an LM 30 owner could take us out on the water so we can feel how she performs under sail. We would be more than willing to make a contribution for your time.

Many thanks for your response. We’re based on the Essex Coast but are very willing travel and can be flexible in terms of location and dates.

Sorry ... can't help you out that weekend, but next time you're visiting Vancouver Island in British Columbia Canada, we'll be happy to take you out on our LM32.
While it certainly is not a race boat, we are quite pleased with how our LM32 sails. We get to where we want to go comfortably, and we think efficiently. In some sea and wind conditions, our LM32 is faster than my brother's Gulf 32, while in other conditions his boat is faster. We have chased zephyrs on occasion, and while light wind sailing is slow, it is possible... although once the wind gets above say 5 kn the boat performs quite well. (We do not own a spinaker - main and roller furling genoa only) For an exhilarating ride buy a planing hull, for comfortable cruising in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia... rain or shine... our pilothouse LM32 is wonderful.

As far as the sailing performance is concerned it is very subjective to say the least as the performance on the day we passed a so and so yacht might be different to the next time ! This can be due to many factors eg wind strength, sail trim, rig in tune, condition of the underwater sections, skippers concentration at that time and this of course applies to the boat being passed as well as the LM30 ! l've passed some boats l would have thought impossible and usually l ask myself why but also enjoying the moment. The same applies when a boat passes us although l tend to think they have the engine on.

lt goes without saying that l'm referring to cruising yachts as l would expect the cruiser/racers sporting high tech racing sails etc to fly past and l only compare with similar sized boats but not always motorsailers or pilothouse types.

For me the LM30 is very easy to sail, comfortable in seaway and performs as well as any other 30-31' sailing boat. The only downside and it's not really an issue for me is that the LM30 is not the best performer in light winds but you can't have everything !

l have somewhere a LM30 used boat test against other similar boats, l'll try and get it posted.

When l purchased the LM30 it was without a test sail but having researched beforehand, usedboat tests, comments on other forums and also looking at the specification ie sail area, weight ballast ratio etc l came to the conclusion it would sail reasonably well - it performs a lot better then l expected! l'll be very sorry when she's sold.

Hi Have owned a LM30 for a number of years and sometimes enter club races. Sailing is not disappointing with a good turn of speed.
Mine is fin keel with folding Volvo three bladed propeller. Normally a clean hull with sails in good condition as normal gives good passage times. When the rain comes inside we go using a tiller auto pilot with remote. If its comfort and good sailing you will not be disappointed. Look at the size of the sailing rig compared to motor sailors. Ours is one of last one built in 1989 and still has a nice look due to the build quality.
