Both my genoa cars are original (1985). The spring adjustment on one has stopped working, so l can't make it stay where l want it; the other has a tenuous hold but may be going the same way. I see that the cars are marked "LM" and the tracks don't look like the usual T-section ones. Nothing leaks, and the sheaves are fine. I'd rather not have to replace both cars and their tracks. Has anyone any advice to offer?
We had a different problem with the cars, in that the sheaves were worn oval! If you remove one end stop from the tracks (they're only held with self tappers), you can slide off the cars and drop them in a bucket of diesel. or if you are more sophisticated, WD40! That should free up the spring mechanisms. If not, at least you can attack them on the bench to check for broken parts. Hope that helps.
I had a similar problem and decided that I would replace the cars, I used Barton 32mm towable Cars but they were expensive £120 each.
They came with a nylon insert but they would only fit without it but seem to work OK so far.
I've yet to really get a nice arrangement of ropes & blocks to adjust them from the cockpit, I'm using a single line at the moment but I'm sure it can be improved on.
You could set up a barber hauler from a point forward of the usual range of car movement (maybe the midships cleat, if you have one) then bring the line aft so that when you haul in on it the genoa sheet is pulled down. That would have the same effect as moving the car forward on the track. Fortunately, Pete's suggestion of taking the cars off and drenching them in diesel/WD40 did the trick
