My Bukh DV20 (1975) has a serious oil leak which is coming from just behind the flywheel. I am going to try removing the flywheel (weight = 30kg I believe) in the next few days but am expecting that the problem may be more than just a worn oil seal. If the shaft is pitted I thought I might try a "Speedi Sleeve" from SKF. I will provide an update on what I find in case anyone is interested in future.
In the meantime, if anyone has any experience of this kind of oil leak please let me know!
Have you checked the pressure release valve under the valve cover, if this is blocked I'm told it can cause oil to be forced out of the crankcase seal behind the flywheel.
Apologies for the late reply. I failed in getting the flywheel off: although I was able to clamp the flywheel to some extent using the crank handle locked against a plank of wood the torque I was applying seemed a bit worrying to me and I thought I would get an experienced mechanic to take a look. He is scheduled to do that on Tuesday so I will talk to him before then about your suggestion - that would save a lot of effort if that is the problem.
THe mechanic checked out the pressure relief valve and it was ok. He removed the flywheel by applying a clamp to it before undoing the hex-drive bolts. The oil seal is definitely leaking and fortunately the shaft looks clean. So the part is on order.
